Milestone 8: The End

After two years of work I have finally completed my EPQ - at the end of it I have successfully made two fully finished scenes of my documentary and a ten minute short film I made with the BFI. I have looked over my initial goals and how well I have achieved them: How to write a compelling screenplay - I have succeeded at this goal as I have written multiple compelling screenplays for this project, all of which have steadily increased in quality as I have progressed How to direct a film within a certain period - This goal did not entirely get accomplished: as while I managed to accomplish all of my pre-production sections inside of the allocated time, I very much fell short on the filming front which carried on far longer than intended How to craft bold and unique shots for my film - This goal was certainly accomplished as all 3 of my finished projects contain bold and striking cinematography which has improved over the course of my project How to hire out music to use in my film - This...

Milestone 7: Two scenes fully edited

After much work I have managed to fully finish and edit 2 scenes from my planned documentary. This will do as a demonstration of what I have learnt over the course of my EPQ when combined with my presentation and the film I made with the BFI. The scenes are the first two of the short film and act as a proof of concept for what the finished film would have looked like. Overall I am very happy with the level of quality and polish I have achieved with the video - for example the variety of angles in the second one or the dramatic, chisacuro-heavy lighting of the first or the tight, witty scripting of both. If I could go back and make changes with what I have learnt across this project I would firstly make it with a larger team so as to spread out my responsibilities and to keep myself from having a workload so big I could not finish the project - related to this I would once again dial down the size of the project to around ten minutes so it could be accomplished quickly and easily

Milestone 6: 3 scenes fully filmed

As of January 2023 I have made a decision with the direction of the project: That being that the project in it's current state in unfinishable when I take into account the other A levels and responsibilities I have at this time. As a result I have made the decision to instead make the project a proof of concept of what the film could have been - to this end I have decided that I will instead make the project 3 fully edited scenes which I will then explain with commentary about my journey with the project as a presentation. Overall I would say this is a good course action as it both preserves the original purpose of the project (to create a portfolio) while also making it easier to finish the project and adhere to the EPQ requirements

Filmmaking research: British Film Insititute

I have recently taken part in the filmmaking short course offered by the British Film Institute this has overall been an extremely useful experience as it has effectively been a three month crash course in all the different parts of filmmaking - from filming to editing to scriptwriting. To do this I had to shoot my own short film as well as attend QnA sessions and Masterclasses with industry professionals such as director Clio Bernard which has also helped to give me an insight into the actual working film industry, how I can enter it as well as providing me with useful contacts for the future Furthermore I will also hopefully gain an NCFE level 2 grade in Preparing To Work in The Film Industry which is a recognized qualification across the profession Overall this has been an extremely useful experience for me as it has helped me to improve my skills and knowledge in all areas of the film industry as well as make various valuable contacts - including Yen Yau: a talent executive wh...

Milestone 5: Documentary

Over the six-weeks holiday, the worst came to pass - My friend's farm burnt down due to the UK heatwaves. As a result I had no location on which I could make my movie and as a result I was not able to film my movie in the allotted time period. This will not be the end of the project however, i have decided to take my year of experiences and training that i have given myself for this project and channel it into helping future young filmmakers who will one day be in my position while making their first movie and dealing with how difficult it is To this end I have decided to remake my film as a combination piece - half documentary and half art-film detailing my inspiration behind making my first movie and my struggles to get it produced. I have planned out the process as follows: September will be for scripting my documentary and figuring out the cinematography October will be for filming the movie November will be for editing the movie into a finished product At the end of these ...

Milestone 4: Filming

As of July 2022 everything is currently in place for me to begin filming: My actors are assembled (Daniel and Brayden have been successfully brought in as replacements) and I have sourced cameras and microphones with The Mighty Creatives fund and the script is in the best state it's ever been. At this stage in the project I am more than prepared to start filming as soon as the six weeks holidays begin. To ensure that the entire project does not hinge on this succeeding I have devised multiple contingencies on where to take the project next: 1. If no actors are available I can simply go to The Bolsover Drama Group to source new ones 2. If the equipment does not work I can borrow some from the Tupton Hall Media department 3. If the right lighting cannot be sourced then i can borrow lights from the Tupton Media department The only issue in the plan would be if the set somehow became unavailable, however I have discussed with the owner of the farm for his permission and the farm shoul...

Casting contingencies

As I have been nearing the actual filming phase of my movie, I have run into the issue of my friends Joe and James maybe not being able to take part in the filming as the two assassins. This leaves me with a few options: 1. Replace Joe and James and proceed with filming as planned 2. Wait until Joe and James can fill in and proceed with filming 3. Only film one section of the movie and cut out the parts with Joe in If I am forced to replace Joe and James then I will replace them with Brayden and Daniel from my school's drama group
