Fight Scene research

During my rewrites I have decided that I would like to replace the gunplay in the film with fight scenes - as it will be simpler, not require as much editing, less violent (making it more appropriate for a school production) and most of all - more fun for those involved.

I am a lifelong fan of martial arts movies and fight scenes so I have spent a lot of time in my life watching fight scenes religiously. However for the purpose of this EPQ I need to find out how to make one, to accomplish this I have watched a multitude of videos on this topic on youtube: From behind the scenes footage from martial arts films to martial arts demonstrations to get me well acquainted with fighting and how to film it.

From my research I have concluded a fight scene need three things to be good.

1. Speed: A slow fight scene will be boring and will lose the audience very quickly whereas a fight scene that is fast and frenetic will keep the audience on the edge of their seats and swirl them along with the action

2. Clarity: A fight scene where the audience cannot see what is happening (such as the infamous fight scenes from the film Taken 3) will not be very good as it will leave them confused and lost. Whereas a fight scene with minimal cuts, relatively smooth camera movement and wide shots (like those from The Raid or Kingsman) will allow the audience to see all of the action and keep them invested

3. Impact: For a fight scene to really resonate with an audience it will need to be have physical impact and feel as if people are actually getting hit. This can be achieved in many different ways: From sound effects to illustrate the hit or changing the colour correction to illustrate pain at a particularly successful manoeuvre. For this step I may need to create my sound effects through use of Foley sound.
