Oliver Stone webinar

One piece of research I have conducted to get me better acquainted with the actual creative process of making films was attending a webinar on filmmaking by Oscar winning director Oliver Stone.

Overall it was very helpful, below I have listed some main points I could pick out from watching it

-Film is a business about failing: You have to try and try again and work past numerous failures if you wish to succeed in the business. Never lose hope in it

-Finding a producer is important - they will be able to fund my film and make it happen

-It is ok to dip in and out: Oliver was a soldier and a Yale student before eventually becoming a filmmaker

-It is a very competitive business, I will have to work hard and prove myself if I am to succeed

-Finding somebody to take you under your wing is very important (Stone did this with various directors and screenwriters before becoming one in his own right) as they can mentor you, connect you with people in the industry and support you with advocacy and funds.

-Dramatization can be used in film to make them more interesting (as long as it is not intended as a documentation tool but rather as entertainment)

-Inspiration is everywhere - for Stone it was modern events like Vietnam

-Take a break from time to time: If you concentrate on film for too long it will burn you out, to combat this Stone has found writing books is helpful.

Overall I would say the webinar has been very useful, it is words of advice directly from the mouth of a filmmaker who has successfully made his way into the industry and won Oscars. The advice given had also been very insightful as an as an aspiring filmmaker as it has given me more perspective on what the industry is actually like and how to get into it.
